ATHENS, W. Va. – Fresh off of a 1-1 tie at home against preseason Mountain East Conference favorite West Virginia Wesleyan, the Concord University women's soccer team heads back into competition for two road MEC matches this week. CU plays at Shepherd 1:00 p.m. Wednesday and at West Liberty 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
LAST WEEK
Concord defeated King University 1-0 before opening up conference play with the aforementioned 1-1 tie against West Virginia Wesleyan. The tie broke Concord's eight-match losing streak vs. the Bobcats. On the year, Concord is 2-1-1 overall and has not lost a game since its season-opener against Converse College.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
Concord's home game against Wesleyan marked the only time in September that CU, which plays eight of its first 10 games on the road, will play at Anderson Field. The 2013 Mountain Lions are bucking a trend of CU teams playing poorly on the road. In 2011 and 2012 Concord won just five road matches; CU has already won two away games this season.
Freshman goalie
Kristin Twomey was named MEC Defensive Player of the Week after posting 11 saves and one shutout last week against King and Wesleyan. In three starts this year, Twomey is 2-0-1 with 13 saves, a 0.31 goals against average (GAA) and a save percentage of .929. Her GAA and .929 save percentage both rank second in the conference.
Twomey was the second Concord player to earn honors from the league office this year, junior back
Abby Barber was the first ever MEC Defensive Player of the Week following a two-goal, one-assist week against Converse and West Virginia Tech to begin the season.
Sophomore forward
Kari Simon leads Concord and is in a five-way tie for the MEC lead in goals with three. Simon scored her second game-winning goal of the year in CU's 1-0 at King on Sept. 11.
Despite having her consecutive games with a point streak end vs. Wesleyan, Barber is still tied with Simon for the team lead in points with six off of two goals and two assists.
Concord's overtime-forcing goal against Wesleyan came from the freshmen combination of forward
Emily Cole and back
Kiana Brown. The goal and assist were collegiate firsts for both players. Cole's 14 shots this season is a conference-high.
Seven players have started all four games for Concord (Barber, Brown, Cole, Simon, senior midfielder
Sami Spertzel, senior midfielder
Melissa Woo Ling and junior back
Paris Wood).
SCOUTING SHEPHERD
Like Concord, Shepherd comes into Wednesday's match at 2-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the MEC. Most recently, the Rams tied at Charleston, 1-1. SU wins have come over Davis & Elkins, 1-0, and Ursuline, 2-1 with its lone loss on the season being a 3-1 defeat against Le Moyne. Five different players have scored goals for Shepherd this season, including Courtney Baltizar, who leads the team with four points (one goal / two assists).
SCOUTING WEST LIBERTY
West Liberty is 1-3 on the season. The Hilltoppers defeated Chowan, 3-0, but have lost to Point Park, 2-1, Ursuline, 3-2, and MEC rival Urbana, 3-2. WLU plays at West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday before returning home to prepare for Concord. Courtney Webb has recorded a team-best three goals for West Liberty.
