Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Concord University women's soccer team opened the conference portion of their schedule at home Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field against West Virginia Wesleyan. CU and Wesleyan tied 1-1.
Not only was it the Mountain East Conference opener for the Mountain Lions, but the home opener as well.
After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats were first to break through in the 70th minute. Hannah Gurtis received the ball from Kristi Dalton and sent it by Concord goalie freshman
Kristin Twomey.
In the 83rd minute, freshman
Kiana Brown played a ball into the box, where fellow classmate
Emily Cole chipped it past WVWC goalkeeper Hilary Dewitt for her first collegiate goal.
"Emily was a real warrior out there today," Concord head coach Stefani Workman said. "She was able to track down just about every ball that was sent her way."
The two overtime periods went back-and-forth with neither team being able to gain a solid advantage leading to the tie. The Bobcats took the only two shots in the extra period, but both attempts sailed well off their marks.
The draw against the Bobcats snapped an eight game losing streak vs. Wesleyan for Concord dating back to 2007.
Twomey was strong in net for the Mountain Lions as she played all 110 minutes and recorded eight saves on the afternoon to run her record to 2-0-1 on the year.
For the game, Concord had 13 shots and four shots on goal.
Paris Wood and
Kari Simon each had a strike towards the goal and Cole finished with two.
Sunday marked the only time the women's soccer team will be at home during September.
"It was a good result for us today against the conference preseason favorite," Workman said. "We need to really us this game going forward since we aren't at home the rest of this month."
Concord will travel to Shepherd on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.Â
