Concord to Compete at King University Invite

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team is set to begin its second weekend of competition with four matches at the King University Invitational. The Mountain Lions will square off against North Greenville University (2:15 p.m.) and Lees-McRae College (6:45 p.m.) on Friday before rounding the weekend off with matches vs. Southern Wesleyan (12:15 p.m.) and King (4:45 p.m.) on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
-Concord started its season last weekend at the Tony Banner Memorial Invitational in Clarion, Pa. The Mountain Lions defeated Godley-Beacom 3-0 before losing to Edinboro, 3-1, and Clarion, 3-0.

-The Mountain Lions were led by junior outside hitter Brytni Willis, who earned all-tournament honors, after totaling 25 kills, six aces, 29 digs and one block for the weekend.

-Junior middle hitter Sarah Jones also had a solid weekend, totaling 23 kills, a .224 attack percentage to go with five blocks and 27 digs. Jones moved up to fifth place all-time for CU in career kills with 634.

-Fellow middle hitters senior Jasmin Sutherland and freshman Lauren Richardson proved to be a formidable opposition inside as the duo combined for 20 blocks with Sutherland accounting for eight blocks and Richardson making an immediate impact in her first collegiate matches with 12 blocks.

-Sutherland also came out of the weekend ranked third on the squad with 13 kills. Richardson and junior setter Amanda Walker were tied for fourth at nine kills each.

-Walker handled the majority of the setting duties for Concord, tallying 42 assists (3.82 per set) while also adding six aces and a team-best 34 digs to go with five blocks. Walker's career assist total of 532 ranks eighth in Concord history behind teammate Nikki McMillan (833).

-Other contributors of note from last weekend included junior Lindsey Smith (32 digs) and junior setter Whytni Willis (21 assists). Willis' 12 assists against Edinboro were a career-high.

-As a team, Concord hit .176 while holding its opponents to a hitting percentage of just .125.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
North Greenville comes into the Concord match with a 1-3 record and on a three-match losing streak. Lees-McRae, Concord's other opponent on Friday, enters the weekend winless on the year at 0-4.

Southern Wesleyan, a NAIA school, has competed in 14 matches already this season and is 9-5 on the season. Host King checks in at 2-3 on the year with its most recent match being a 3-1 victory over Virginia Intermont.

UP NEXT
Concord will host West Virginia Tech and Bluefield State University in the Concord triangular Sept. 18. The Mountain Lions play Bluefield State at 3:00 p.m. and West Virginia Tech at 7:00 p.m. in the Carter Center.
