Women’s Soccer Picks up 1-0 Win at King

Box Score
BRISTOL, Tenn. – Sophomore forward Kari Simon scored an early second half goal and freshman goalie Kristin Twomey stopped three shots as the Concord University women's soccer team won its second consecutive game with a 1-0 victory at King University Wednesday afternoon in Bristol, Tenn.

"We started off well in the first half, but we weren't able to find the back of the net," Head Coach Stefani Workman said. "In the second half we were very determined and Abby (Barber) and Kari (Simon) were able to connect for the go-ahead goal. Moving forward we need to be able to finish our chances and put teams away. I hope all the fans can come out to our first MEC game on Sunday and give us a home field atmosphere."

The victory improves the Mountain Lions' record to 2-1 overall on the season. The loss dropped King's record to 0-3 on the year.

Concord pressured the Tornado's early with five shots in first 12 minutes of action including two by Simon which were saved by King goalie Morgan Lawson and one by freshman forward Emily Cole which hit the post.

The Mountain Lions put two more shots on goal in the opening half, one by Cole and one by Simon, but Lawson was able to stop both shots. Meanwhile Twomey helped the CU cause with a trio of saves of her own in the opening 45 minutes and the match went into halftime tied 0-0.

However, the tie wouldn't last long as Simon posted her third goal of the season with a strike from the right side just over six minutes into the second period. Junior back Abby Barber assisted on the goal, extending her streak of games with at least one point to three.

King managed two attempts on the CU goal midway through the second half, but the shots were both off and Concord closed out the game with the two-score victory. The shutout win was the second for Twomey in as many starts.

The Mountain Lions held a 12-8 advantage over the Tornado's in shots. Simon led the Mountain Lions with six attempts, four of which were on goal followed by Cole (three shots), Barber (two shots) and senior midfielder Melissa Woo Ling (one shot).

After starting the season on the road for three straight contests, Concord will finally open the home portion of its schedule when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan in Mountain East Conference play 12:00 p.m. Sunday and Anderson Field.
