Softball Drops Two to Fairmont State, 7-1, 2-0

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University softball team fell to Fairmont State University Sunday afternoon in a pair of games, 7-1 and 2-0.

The Mountain Lions' overall record drops to 14-21 overall and 2-8 in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with the losses. The Fighting Falcons improved to 17-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference with the wins.

Freshmen Kristi Benvenuto and Alyssa Morris led the Concord offense as each player totaled two hits on the day. Sophomore Lacey McDougall (7-10) pitched a gem in game two, holding Fairmont State to just two runs and two hits with one strikeout and no walks in the tough loss.

Game One: Concord 1 - Fairmont State 7

Fairmont State used a five-run third inning in game one to help secure the 7-1 victory. FSU also scored runs in the first and sixth innings.

Concord broke up the shutout in the seventh inning when McDougall drove in senior Becca Gleason, who had walked to lead off the inning before advancing to third off of a sacrifice bunt from senior Stephanie Harper and a FSU fielding error.

Sophomore Whitney Carrigan was 1-for-3 and Morris was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Sophomore Brantlea Wood (1-2) put in 2.1 innings of work for the loss after allowing six hits and six runs while striking out one batter and walking three. Sophomore Rachael Mack (3-8) took over in the circle in the third inning and quieted the FSU bats, scattering five hits in just one run in the game's final 4.2 innings.

Game Two: Concord 0 - Fairmont State 2
Concord's defense and McDougall's fine pitching, held the Fighting Falcons to just two hits and no runs in the first four innings of play in game two.

However, Fairmont State broke through with a run in the fifth off of an RBI-double by Madison Bowman as well as a home run in the seventh inning from Carly Mundie.

The CU offense produced five hits in the game with a pair of singles from Benvenuto leading the way. Harper, Morris and Mack also tallied base hits for the Mountain Lions.

McDougall's loss drops her record to 7-10 while lowering her ERA to 4.15.

Concord's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when the Maroon and Gray recorded two hits in the inning  and eventually had runners on first and second before FSU Nikki Nuzum (6-2) forced Mack to groundout to end the inning.

CU will be back in action with a pair of conference games on Wednesday, April 10 when the Mountain Lions travel to Elkins, W. Va. to face Davis & Elkins College in a doubleheader.
