ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit University in conference play Saturday afternoon at the CU Softball Field. The Mountain Lions dropped game one 7-4  and won game two 5-1.

Concord moves to 8-18 in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and 20-31 overall while Jesuit is 13-12 in league play and 20-27 overall.

Sophomore Jessica Seymour paced Concord on the day batting 1.000 going 6-for-6 at the plate including three singles, two doubles, two RBI, a walk, and two runs. Seymour's efforts boosted her 2013 batting average to .359 tying her for second on the team with Freshman Alyssa Morris only behind senior Becca Gleason (.380).

Game One - Concord 4 - Wheeling Jesuit 7
Concord's opponent got on top quickly with four runs off of four hits and a CU error in the first inning. It was the bottom of the second when freshman Kristi Benvenuto hit a ground out RBI to the short stop, scoring Harper for CU's first run. Harper had reached on a lead-off single to right field and advanced off of Seymour's single to right field.

The Mountain Lions kept trying to chip away at the Cardinals' lead by plating another run in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Stephanie Harper hit a one out, one ball double to left center when Seymour followed that up with a double of her own, bringing Harper across.

CU held Jesuit to no hits until the top of the sixth. The Cardinals only managed one run on two hits due to the efforts of sophomore Lacey McDougall in the circle and the CU defense while stranding three on base. In the top of the seventh, Jesuit extended their lead when two doubles led to two RBI until the Mountain Lions retired the Cardinals getting the last out on a pop up to McDougall.

Concord's rally attempt during the last three outs of the game led to three hits and two runs. Seymour's hot bat led off the team with a single being followed up by back-to-back doubles by sophomore Hayley Wade and Benvenuto. The doubles brought the score to the final, 7-4 before WJ retired CU on the next three batters.

McDougall (10-15) received the hard loss in seven innings of work while allowing nine hits, five earned runs, one strikeout, and no walks.

CU totalled eight hits as a team with five Mountain Lions contributing to that number including Seymour (3), Harper (2), Gleason (1), Benvenuto (1), and Wade (1).

Game Two - Concord 5 - Wheeling Jesuit 1

Concord and Jesuit held each other to just one hit and no runs until the Cardinals plated the first score off of senior Aleecia Sunagel's solo home run in the top of the fourth.

The Mountain Lions did their damage in the bottom of the fifth inning starting with sophomore Rachael Mack's lead-off single to center field. Gleason's sacrificial bunt advanced Mack to second and with two outs, Seymour reached from a pitch-out walk. McDougall continued CU's momentum with a single to right center scoring Mack.

Morris knocked an RBI double bringing Seymour in regardless of the Jesuit pitching change. McDougall scored on a wild pitch, Morris scored on a fielder's choice, and Wade scored off of sophomore Brantlea Wood's single down the middle. Wade found herself on base from a walk.

Mack (6-13) earned the complete game victory scattering six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts and a walk.

As a team, Concord was 8-for-24 with four RBI, two doubles, and a walk.

Weather pending, the Mountain Lions will be hosting their final games of the 2013 season Sunday, April 28. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm in a non-conference match-up against West Virginia Tech University.
