Box Score 2 BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Concord University baseball team started its final weekend of the 2013 season with a pair of wins Friday as the Mountain Lions took two games from Bluefield State 15-8 and 11-3.
Concord (31-18, 25-9 WVIAC) was led by
Joey Miller, who hit three home runs on the day and drove in a total of seven runs. Miller, who now has 13 home runs on the season, launched a three-run home run in game one before capping his day off with two home runs in game two. Miller's seven RBI gives him a team-high 63 on the season.
Complementing Miller's power was freshman outfielder
Andrew Seigel and junior outfielder
Bret Blevins. The duo combined for eight hits, six runs scored and three stolen bases.
Game One: Concord 15 – Bluefield State 8
Concord scored eight runs in the second inning and never trailed in its 15-8 victory in game one.
The Mountain Lions out hit Bluefield State 16-12 and had seven players record two-hit games including Miller, sophomore catcher
T.J. Brockway and sophomore third baseman
Ryan Johnston, who all had three-RBI games.
Sophomore second baseman
Jerrod Groves also had a multi-RBI day with a pair of run scoring hits.
Junior pitcher
Ryan Weatherholtz went five innings and gave up just three runs on six hits while striking out two batters. The victory improved Weatherholtz's record to 4-1 on the season. Concord's ace has allowed just six runs in his last 18.1 innings pitched.
Brandon Tucker finished off the game for CU, giving up five runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Game Two: Concord 11 – Bluefield State 3
The Mountain Lions benefitted from a nine-run fourth-inning to defeat the Big Blues 11-3 in game two to secure the doubleheader sweep.
On the mound
Tyler Coyle gave three runs in five innings to earn the victory.
Drew Spear and
Bryant Pybus threw shutout innings in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to lockdown the win.
Miller hit home runs in the second and fourth inning as well as sending a double to left field in the fourth to finish 3-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Seigel and Blevins both registered two hits in the win as well with Blevins driving in two runs.
Concord will look for the three-game sweep of Bluefield State Saturday.
