ELKINS, W. Va. – The Concord University baseball team persevered for a 4-3 win in 10 innings over Davis & Elkins to begin the day before running away with a 15-2 victory in game two to secure two critical West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division wins Saturday.
The victories improve Concord's record to 23-15 overall and to 18-6 in the WVIAC. Concord and Davis & Elkins entered the day ranked second and third, respectively, in the WVIAC-South Division.
Game one was a back-and-forth battle that saw Concord strike first in the third inning when senior outfielder
Jacob Mays reached base on a double only to be brought home later in the inning by freshman outfielder
Andrew Seigel, giving CU a 1-0 lead.
Junior pitcher
Ryan Weatherholtz kept the Davis & Elkins offense silent until the Senators managed to break up the shutout in the fifth inning by scoring three runs, two of which were unearned, to take a 3-1 advantage through.
However, CU regrouped and tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth when junior outfielder
Joey Miller drove in two Concord runs.
Weatherholtz continued his dominant day, holding D&E at three runs until turning the game over to the Concord bullpen after 6.1 innings of work.
The Mountain Lions' pitchers kept the Senators' bats in check for the remainder of the game while Concord's offense produced what turned out to be the contest's winning run in the top of the 10th inning when sophomore third baseman
Ryan Johnston plated junior outfielder
Bret Blevins with an RBI-single.
While game one was a low-scoring affair, game two saw Concord's offense reach a double-digit run total for the 17th time this season in the 15-2 rout of Davis & Elkins.
Concord sped out to an 8-2 lead through five innings off of three RBI from Miller, three from Mays, one from sophomore catcher
T.J. Brockway while scoring another run on a wild pitch.
The Mountain Lions' offense capped off the day with seven runs in the final inning to cruise to the 15-2 win.
The Mountain Lions will go for the three-game sweep of Davis & Elkins when the two meet for a nine-inning game, 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
