GLENVILLE, W. Va. - The Concord University softball team dropped its Saturday doubleheader to West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Glenville State College, 2-0 and 5-3.
The Mountain Lions' record drops to 13-14 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Pioneers boost their overall record to 8-5 and their WVIAC mark to 3-2.
Concord recorded five hits on the day against the Pioneers' pitching staff. Senior
Stephanie Harper recorded her first triple of the season and sophomore
Lacey McDougall had three RBI in game two to lead CU.
Game One: Concord 0 - Glenville 2
Concord was shutout by Glenville while giving up the two runs on five hits and two errors. The Pioneers scored their runs in the first and the fifth inning off of RBI-hits from Kayleigh Huck.
The Mountain Lions' best chance for runs came in the second inning when McDougall led off the frame with a single before advancing to second base when freshman
Alyssa Morris reached base off of a fielding error. However, GSC pitcher Sam Weaver recorded three consecutive outs to strand the two runners and get out of the inning.
McDougall, who was 1-for-3 at the plate, was the hard luck loser in the circle after allowing just the five hits and two runs while striking out three batters in six innings.
Game Two: Concord 3 - Glenville 5
Four different Mountain Lions registered hits and McDougall drove in three runs, but it wasn't quite enough as Concord could not overcome a three-run second inning by Glenville State in the 5-3 defeat.
Seniors
Becca Gleason Harper along with Morris and sophomore
Whitney Carrigan were responsible for the hits with Harper's coming by way of a triple.
CU put a run on the scoreboard first off of two Glenville errors during the top of the first inning. Junior
Rachael Mack reached base after the first of four Pioneer errors which led to Harper moving Mack to second with a ground out back to the pitcher.
McDougall finished the sequence off by driving Mack in from second with a grounder that led to another Glenville error to put Concord up 1-0.
Glenville's three-run second inning was sparked by a leadoff home run from Kate Spencer and a two-run single from Brittney Porter.
However, Concord fired back and tied the game at 3-3 by scoring runs in the third and fourth innings.
Gleason led off the third with a single and moved to second off of a successful sacrifice bunt from Mack, leading to another RBI from McDougall, who reached base on the play off of yet another Glenville error.
Sophomore
Jessica Seymour scored the tying run in the fourth by smartly taking home off of a wild pitch.
The Mountain Lions' comeback bid ended when the Pioneers hit RBI-doubles in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-3 lead that Concord could not respond to.
Mack (3-6) gave up five runs and nine hits in for Concord in the defeat.
The Mountain Lions travel to UVA-Wise Monday April 1 for a non-conference doubleheader.
