CU Continues Winning Streak, Beats OVU 17-1, 17-12

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University baseball team extended its winning streak to five games Saturday by scoring 17 runs in back-to-back games to take a doubleheader from Ohio Valley 17-1, 17-12 at Anderson Field.

The victories gives Concord a three-game sweep in the season series against Ohio Valley and improves the Mountain Lions' record to 17-13 overall and 12-5 in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition. OVU falls to 3-19 on the year and 0-12 in the WVIAC.

The wins also mark the fifth and sixth straight games in which Concord has scored at least 11 runs.

Freshman designated hitter Joe Camp had his best day as a Mountain Lion; he combined to go 7-for-9 with 8 RBI, five runs scored, two home runs and two doubles. Camp is now batting .417 on the year.

Game One: Concord 17 – Ohio Valley 12
Saturday's opener was never in doubt as Concord's offense scored 13 runs in the first three innings while sophomore pitcher Kevin Mack (2-0) didn't allow a run until the fifth inning in a dominant five-strikeout, five-hit performance in the CU victory.

Concord set the tone for the day with a nine-run second inning that featured Camp launching two home runs and driving in five of the Mountain Lions' runs.

Other highlights from CU's offensive onslaught included an RBI-double from senior Devin Smith to score the first run of the game in the first inning and a two-run single from junior first baseman Joey Miller in the third inning.

For the game, Camp finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, two home runs and three runs scored. Freshman outfielder Andrew Seigel was a perfect 5-for-5 from the top of the CU batting order while Smith went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI.

Miller concluded the opener 3-for-3 with four RBI, giving him 43 on the season, with a double and a walk.

Mack handed over pitching duties to freshman Austin Southcott in the sixth inning. Southcott struck out two batters and allowed no runs. Sophomore Cody Justus matched Southcott's efforts in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and no runs of his own.

Game Two: Concord 17 – Ohio Valley 12
Concord kept its high-run volume going in game two, jumping out to a seemingly commanding 13-4 lead through four innings.

However, the Fighting Scots clawed back into the contest by scoring five runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to cut Concord's advantage to just one run at 13-12 going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Mountain Lions were able to end the comeback attempt thanks to a four-run sixth inning followed by junior relief pitcher Dustin Nuckels throwing three strikeouts in the seventh inning to preserve the five-run, 17-12, win.

Camp carried over his  hot streak from game one by leading the charge in game two with a 4-for-5, two double, three-RBI performance. Sophomore catcher T.J. Brockway also had three hits to go with three RBI and two runs.

Seigel stole three bases in the game. He now ranks second on the team with 14 steals on the year. Senior outfielder Jacob Mays made his lone hit of the day count, smacking a two-run triple in the first inning.

Concord will look to continue its winning streak when it steps out of conference play for a nine-inning game at King College April 3 at 3:00 p.m.
