Concord Downs Ohio Valley, 16-5

ATHENS, W. Va. – Junior pitcher Tyler Coyle struck out a season-high nine batters and sophomore catcher T.J. Brockway finished one hit shy of the cycle to the lead the Concord University baseball team to a 16-5 win over Ohio Valley Friday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The victory, Concord's third consecutive win, improves the Mountain Lions' record to 15-13 overall and 10-5 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Ohio Valley falls to 3-17 overall and 0-10 in the WVIAC. CU is 12-4 at home this season.

Brockway finished 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored off of a home run, triple and double. The five RBI nearly matched his season total of seven entering the day and tied Josh Wenger's five-RBI game at Chowan for the most by a Concord player this year.

Coyle's nine-strikeout day was the most by a Concord pitcher this season. On the day, Coyle (3-3) allowed five runs (four earned) and nine hits over 6.2 innings pitched for the win. Coyle struck out the side in the fourth inning.

Junior pitcher Tim Leather closed out the game by allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out two batters in 2.1 innings of work. Leather qualified for his first save of the season by entering the game when Concord was up by only three runs.

Junior first baseman Joey Miller and sophomore third baseman Ryan Johnston each hit home runs and had three-RBI days. Miller's home run was his ninth of the year, a WVIAC-high, while Johnston's homer was his third on the season.

Johnston finished the day with three hits, his second three-hit game of the year.

Senior Devin Smith, who started at second base Friday, joined Johnston and Brockway with three hits of his own while also scoring three runs in addition to stealing two bases.

Coyle and Ohio Valley pitcher Zach Heath controlled the game early. Through the first four innings, Coyle allowed just four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts while Heath held the CU bats, which entered the day as the 10th highest scoring offense in the nation, to only two hits and two runs.

Ohio Valley added another run in the fifth inning and took a 3-2 lead into the sixth.

However, the Mountain Lions' bats got going in the bottom of the frame when CU turned posted five runs thanks to Smith scoring on a fielding miscue, Johnston hitting  a two-run single and Brockway coming through with a two-run double to make it a 7-3 game.

Smith scored again in the seventh off of a sacrifice fly from Miller and Concord busted open the contest in the eighth with an eight-run inning that saw sophomore second baseman Jerrod Groves, junior outfielder Bret Blevins, freshman outfielder Andrew Seigel, Johnston and Miller all produce RBI-hits with Johnston's and Miller's being home runs.

Concord has scored more than 10 runs in four consecutive games. The Maroon and Gray are 11-1 when scoring double digit runs.

The Mountain Lions will look for two more wins Saturday when the meet Ohio Valley for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. to close out the series.
