Mountain Lions Sweep Battlers 11-4, 13-11

The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wins improve Concord's record to 14-13 overall and 9-5 in league play. Concord has now scored at least 10 runs in a game 11 times this year and are averaging 8.9 runs per game.

Alderson-Broaddus' record falls to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in WVIAC competition.

A quartet of Mountain Lions strung together back-to-back solid performances to lead Concord to the triumphs.

Senior outfielder Jacob Mays combined to go 3-for-3 with four runs scored, four RBI and three walks. Mays also stole a base and had three extra base hits Thursday, two doubles and a home run. The performance lifted Mays' batting average to .300 on the season to go with his team-high .517 on-base percentage.

Junior outfielder Bret Blevins stole his WVIAC-best 18th base of the year along with a home run, four runs scored and four RBI.

Senior designated hitter / pitcher Devin Smith went 5-for-8 with three runs, two RBI and one stolen base. Freshman outfielder Andrew Seigel compiled four hits in six at-bats to go with five runs scored, one RBI, three walks, a double and a stolen base.

Game One: Concord 11 – Alderson-Broaddus 4
Blevins and junior first baseman Joey Miller both hit home runs while junior pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz (2-1) matched a season-high with seven strikeouts to pick up the complete-game victory.

Miller's home run was his conference-most eighth of the year and second in the last three games. Blevins led four Concord players with at least two RBI at three. Miller, Smith and sophomore second baseman Jerrod Groves all added two RBI each.

Seigel and Mays both had perfect games at the plate, going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2.

The Mountain Lions' offense scored runs in every inning while Weatherholtz controlled the game on the mound. Just one of his four runs allowed were earned. He came through with third-out strikeouts with two runners on base in both the second and sixth innings to keep the Battlers in check.

Game Two: Concord 13 – Alderson-Broaddus 11
Concord rallied from an early 6-2 deficit by scoring six runs in the third inning on the way to the 13-11 win.

Smith and Miller both had three-hit games with Smith scoring three times and Miller driving in three runs. Mays registered a game-high four RBI off of his second home run of the year, a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

Junior pitcher Chris Baker improved to 4-0 on the season out of the CU bullpen. Baker came on in relief of Smith with the scored tied at 8-8 with two outs in the fourth inning and proceeded to scatter six hits and three runs while striking out two batters to help Concord to the win.

Concord broke the 8-8 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to Mays' sacrifice fly and a two-run single by freshman Joe Camp.

CU added additional runs in the fifth and sixth while fending off an Alderson-Broaddus squad that scored three runs in the final two innings, but left the game's tying runs on base to end the contest in the seventh inning.

Concord is back in action at home Friday against Ohio Valley for a nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
