Baseball Heads to CIAA-WVIAC Challenge

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University baseball team is set to begin its second weekend of the 2013 season with three games at the CIAA-WVIAC Challenge in King, N.C. The Mountain Lions play Chowan on Friday followed by games against St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State on Saturday and Sunday.

Concord enters play with a 0-3 record after starting the year by being swept in a three-game series at No. 29 Armstrong Atlantic.

Chowan has lost its last two games and is 2-9 overall, St. Augustine brings a 4-3 record into the challenge while Winston-Salem State starts play at 2-4.

After this weekend, Concord will embark on a 10-game homestand starting with a Feb. 23 doubleheader vs. Indiana Pa.

Mountain Lion Notes
• Sophomore third baseman Ryan Johnston has been named to the Tino Martinez Division II Player of the Year watch list.

• Junior outfielder Bret Blevins earned WVIAC Player of the Week honors after going 7-for-14 with three runs, one RBI and two doubles in Concord's season-opening series at Armstrong Atlantic.

• Junior pitcher Ryan Weatherholtz picked up weekly conference honors of his own when he was named the WVIAC Pitcher of the Week. Weatherholtz started the first game of the season for CU, going five innings with three strikeouts while allowing just two runs and six hits against a tough Armstrong Atlantic lineup.

• Other top Mountain Lion performers coming out of Concord's first series included sophomore second baseman Jerrod Groves, junior first baseman Joey Miller and junior relief pitcher Tim Leather.

• Groves hit .333 with four runs scored and one RBI.

• Miller was CU's top run-producer with five RBI off of one home run and two doubles.

• Leather logged five innings of work in two appearances, ending the series with three strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA. He has retired five consecutive batters and has not allowed a run in his last four innings pitched.

• Prior to the start of the season, Concord was picked to win the WVIAC-South for the first time in school history.

• Individual preseason honors also rolled in as Johnston, Blevins and senior pitcher/outfielder Devin Smith were all named to the NCBWA preseason All-Atlantic Region team.
