ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University men's basketball team will kick off its 2013-14 season this weekend Friday against Fayetteville State and Saturday vs. host Winston-Salem State at the Big House Gaines Tip-Off Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C.
MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• Now in his third season as the head coach of his alma mater,
Kent McBride will guide a team that returns five players from last year's 16-11 squad as well as 10 newcomers.
• Concord is 0-2 all-time against Winston-Salem State. Friday's contest vs. Fayetteville will be the first meeting between CU and FSU.
• The Mountain Lions were recently picked to finish in fourth place in the Mountain East Conference this season in the league's preseason coaches poll.
• Concord will rely heavily on junior point guard
Mike Boyd, who has started 55 of 56 games played in his collegiate career.
• Boyd is coming off of a career-year after averaging personal-best per game averages of 11.6 points, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals.
• In addition to being a reliable free throw shooting (75.2 percent for his career), Boyd has also been a consistent shooter from the field at 41.1 percent for his career.
• Boyd is 62 assists from 300 for his career and just 63 away from moving into the top-10 all-time in CU history.
• Sophomore forward
Cam Shannon finished his freshman campaign very strong, averaging 9.8 ppg over his last six contests. For the year, Shannon, who started 12 of Concord's final 14 games, averaged 5.7 ppg and 1.3 rebounds per game.
• Shannon made the most of his time at the free throw line in 2012-13, shooting 84.5 percent from the charity stripe (49-for-58).
• Much like Shannon, sophomore forward
Nick Moyer found himself playing significant minutes towards the latter part of last season, starting 11 of CU's last 12 games.
• Moyer proved capable of helping the Mountain Lions in a variety of ways be it scoring (11 points at Shepherd), rebounding (eight at Charleston), or on defense (four steals vs. West Virginia State).
• Concord's final two returners are junior guard
Paul Byrd and junior forward
Alex McGlothin.
• Byrd started four of 23 games played, compiling per game averages of 4.2 points, 1.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds.
• McGlothin played in 10 games for CU last year before suffering a season-ending injury. He is scheduled to make his 2013-14 debut in January.
• A pair of junior college transfers in sophomore forward
Terry Hopewell and junior guard A.J. Williams figure to make immediate impacts for Concord.
• Hopewell began his career at Columbus State Community College where he started nine of 24 games played and averaged 5.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game as a freshman.
• Williams was an offensive force at Wythville Community College where he ranked 15th in the nation (NJCAA) in scoring as a sophomore at 20.1 ppg on 56 percent shooting from the field.
• Other newcomers include freshman forward
Grant Dickinson, freshman guard
B.J. Hamlet and freshman forward
Grant Dickinson.
• In Concord's exhibition against Marshall University Barnes connected on 4-of-6 three-point attempts on his way to 15 points while Dickinson nearly matched his classmate with 13 points of his own. On the defensive end, Hamlet came away with a pair of steals.
• Concord and Winston-Salem State last met during the 2004-05 season with the Rams pulling out an 89-80 victory over the Mountain Lions.
