Cavaliers Sweep Concord, 3-0

WISE, Va. – Three different Mountain Lions recorded at least 10 kills, but it wasn't quite enough as the Concord University volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0, at UVa.-Wise Tuesday night in Mountain East Conference play.

The loss drops Concord's record to 13-14 overall and 5-7 in league play. UVa.-Wise improves to 7-17 overall and 2-10 in the MEC with the win.

The Mountain Lions and Cavaliers traded points all night in what was a close contest from start to finish with UVa.-Wise narrowly pulling out 25-22, 26-24, and 25-23 wins.

No team led by more than three points for the entirety of the first set, but with the score tied 20-20 UVa.-Wise was able to go on a 5-3 run to clinch the opener.

Concord overcame a 17-12 deficit in the second set to tie the game at 24-24 before the Cavaliers took the set's final two points off of consecutive kills.

The Mountain Lions played Wise even to 23-23 in the final set. However, a Concord serving error followed by a UVW ace sealed the set and the match for the Cavaliers.

Junior outside hitter Brytni Willis led the way for CU with 13 kills and 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Willis posted a match-best attack percentage of .324.

Senior middle hitter Jasmin Sutherland and junior middle hitter Sarah Jones tallied 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Junior Whytni Willis led all Concord players with three blocks (one solo / two assisted) followed by freshman middle hitter Lauren Richardson with two (one solo / one assisted) as well as Sutherland and Jones at one rejection apiece.

Junior setter Amanda Walker passed out a team-high 19 assists. Fellow junior setter Nikki McMillan was two off the team lead with 17 assists of her own.

In addition to serving one ace, junior libero Lindsey Smith made a team-most 14 digs.

As a team, Concord finished the match with a .192 attack percentage.

Karley Allen posted a match-high 22 kills to pace UVa-Wise.

Concord will look to snap its four-match losing streak when it hosts West Virginia State 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Carter Center. Prior to the match, CU's 2013 senior class of Sutherland, Rebecca Lovejoy and Allie Pennington will be honored.
