BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team lost its first game at the Currence Classic to Chowan University, 76-74, Friday night in Bluefield, W. Va.
The Mountain Lions led for the majority of the game, including a 10-point advantage midway through the first half. However, Chowan continually chipped away at Concord's edge leading to a 6-0 run over the game's final two minutes that ended with a game-winning layup with just three seconds remaining in regulation by Chowan's Tiron Brown to give the Hawks the two-point victory.
Concord was led by senior guard
Mike Boyd, who scored a game-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field including a 4-for-5 performance from three-point range. Boyd, who also passed out a team-high four assists, went 4-for-4 from the foul line in addition to his stellar shooting from the field. Boyd has now scored at least 19 points in three of Concord's six games in 2013-14.
The Mountain Lions' second offensive weapon Friday night was freshman guard
B.J. Hamlet, who poured in 15 points in 26 minutes. Hamlet's double-digit scoring effort was his second in as many games.
Sophomore forward
Nick Moyer chipped in seven points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals as well. Junior guard A.J. Williams added eight points while sophomore forward
Terry Hopewell blocked two shots to push his season total to 12 in just six games played.
As a team, Concord shot 54.2 percent (26-for-48) from the field and 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from three-point territory.
The loss drops Concord's record to 3-3 overall on the season. The defeat is CU's second buzzer-beater loss of the year; Concord also was defeated on a last-second shot against Winston-Salem State earlier in the year.
Chowan was paced by Ashante Ross and Phoenix Butler-Poole. Both players scored 19 points in the victory.
The Mountain Lions will look to end its time at the Currence Classic on a high note with a win against Davis & Elkins 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
