Concord Drops Contest Against Urbana, 78-75

ATHENS, W.Va. – Playing its second tight game in three days, the Concord University women's basketball team fell to Mountain East Conference foe Urbana Monday afternoon, 78-75, on Christie / Cox Court at the Carter Center.

In a game that featured 21 lead changes and four ties, neither team led by double digits until late when Urbana went up by 11 points at 74-63 with 2:33 left in regulation.

However, the Mountain Lions would not concede the game easily, storming back with a 9-0 run with all nine points coming from junior guard Sissy Wagner and junior forward Andrea Bertrand.

After two made Blue Knight foul shots, junior forward Jacqueline Kestner nailed a three-pointer from the corner on a feed from Bertrand to reduce the Urbana lead to 76-75 with 22 seconds left.

However, the Blue Knights proceeded to convert a late layup followed by a last-second CU shot going off target to give Urbana the three-point victory.

Wagner led CU with 24 points on 8-of-16 from the field and five assists. Over her last four games, Wagner is averaging 19.7 points per game while shooting 81.4 percent (22-of-27) from the charity stripe.

Bertrand was strong for the Mountain Lions against UU with her second double-double in four games. She grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds including seven offensive rebounds while scoring 13 points and passing out six assists in the solid all-around effort. For the season, the junior is averaging 16.6 points per game and 8.8 rebounds.

Junior forward Rachel Artrip continued her stellar early season play with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting and 3-of-6 from three point range.

Rounding out the double figure scoring for CU was senior center Sammi Webster, who poured in 11 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds.

For the contest, the Mountain Lions bested Urbana in rebounds (46-42), points off of turnovers (13-12) and in three-point percentage (43.8-37.5) while the Blue Knights edged CU in field goal percentage (40.8-40.0) and points in the paint (34-28).

Key reserve Lexie Taylor led UU with 15 points while playing 21 minutes.

Concord falls to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in MEC play. The Mountain Lions will get a much-needed rest after playing four games in eight days. They will play next at home against Glenville State Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
