WHEELING, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team's season came to an end Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to Fairmont State University in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at the McDonough Center on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University.
After dropping the opening set, 25-23, the Mountain Lions fought back to earn a 25-22 triumph in the second game to even the match at 1-1. Despite playing the second-seeded Fighting Falcons strong in the third and fourth sets Concord was unable to win either contest falling 25-13 and 25-19 en route to the Fairmont State win.
Concord concludes its season at 16-17 overall. Fairmont State improves to 26-6 with the win. The 16 wins by Concord are the most in a single-season for the program since 2002.
The Mountain Lions were led by second team All-MEC honoree junior middle hitter
Sarah Jones, who recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs to go with five blocks. Jones ends her 2013 campaign having led Concord in kills in a season (314) for a third consecutive year.
Senior middle hitter
Jasmin Sutherland wrapped up her historic CU career with an eight-kill, five-block effort. She leaves Concord ranked second for total blocks in a career at 360.
Freshman outside hitter
Felicia Huerta added a season-high eight kills with junior outside hitter
Brytni Willis, who was named an honorable mention All-MEC performer earlier in the week, chipping in seven kills as well as a match-high 19 digs.
Junior setter
Amanda Walker passed out 19 assists while fellow junior setter
Nikki McMillan made 12 digs in addition to 14 assists for her 10th double-double of the year.
Fairmont State was led by Amber Wilson, who recorded a match-high 21 kills. As a team, FSU held a narrow .200 - .197 advantage over Concord in attack percentage.
Thursday's match marked the final collegiate competition for the senior class of Sutherland,
Rebecca Lovejoy and
Allie Pennington. Concord is set to return eight players in 2014 that appeared in at 27 matches this season.
