ATHENS, W. Va. – Junior forward
Rachel Artrip scored 20 points and fellow junior forward
Andrea Bertrand added 16 points to lead the Concord University women's basketball team to a 72-59 victory over local rival Bluefield State Monday night at the Carter Center.
The win evens the Mountain Lions' record at 1-1 on the season. Bluefield State falls to 0-4 with the loss.
Artrip rebounded from a rough 0-for-12 opening night to shoot 8-for-12 from the field, 1-for-3 from three-point range and 3-for-4 from the free throw line against Bluefield State. Monday marked Artrip's fourth career 20-point outing. In addition to her scoring exploits, Artrip also pulled down seven rebounds.
Bertrand finished just shy of the double-double off of her 16 points and game-high nine rebounds. Concord placed a third player in double figures as junior guard
Sissy Wagner chipped in 13 points as well as a game-high six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Concord received significant contributions off the bench from junior guard
Ashley Brown and freshman center
Alley Odell. Brown totaled career-highs of six points and six rebounds while Odell produced seven points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field and 1-of-2 makes from the free throw line.
As a team, Concord held advantages over Bluefield State in field goal percentage (47.2 – 33.3), forced turnovers (16-15), steals (6-5) and points in the paint (42-24).
The Mercer country rivals traded baskets through the first 10 minutes of the first half with the Lady Blues taking an 18-17 lead at the 10:17 mark in the opening period. However, a three-pointer from junior guard
Melea Smith gave CU a 21-18 lead that it would never relinquish.
Bluefield State managed to hold the Concord lead to single digits for much of the game before Concord broke open a 10-point (69-59) edge with two minutes to play in regulation en route to the 13-point win.
The Mountain Lions will look to win its second consecutive game when it hits the road to play at Davis & Elkins Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
