Concord Falls In Four Sets at Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team concluded its 2013 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 loss at Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, W. Va.

The Bobcats took the first two sets over Concord 25-17 and 25-23 before CU bounced back with a 25-23 victory in the third set. However, West Virginia Wesleyan ended Concord's hopes of a comeback with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.

The Mountain Lions end their regular season at 15-16 overall and 7-9 in league play. Concord will be seeded seventh in the upcoming MEC Tournament, which begins Tuesday, Nov. 19. By being seeded seventh, Concord earned the right to host Glenville State in the Tournament's opening round.

Additionally, Concord's 15-win year marked the third consecutive season CU has won at least 15 matches in a year, a feat not accomplished at Concord since 1990 through 1992.

Junior middle hitter Sarah Jones led the way for Concord with a match-high 15 kills to go with four blocks (three solo / one assisted). Junior outside hitter Brytni Willis added 10 kills and a team-high 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.

Junior setter Amanda Walker guided the Concord offense with 21 assists. Fellow junior setter Nikki McMillan chipped in 15 assists and a team-high two aces against the Bobcats.

The Concord attack was also aided by senior middle hitters Jasmin Sutherland and Rebecca Lovejoy, both players tallied seven kills.

For the match, Wesleyan held a .315 to .189 advantage in attack percentage.

The Mountain Lions' opening round match against Glenville State is set for a 7:00 p.m. start Tuesday at the Carter Center.

The Mountain Lions will be holding a clothing drive prior to the match Tuesday to help support those affected by the recent typhoon in the Philippines. CU is encouraging the public to bring any clothes they have to donate to the relief effort to the Carter Center from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Nov. 19. All types of clothes of any size will be graciously accepted. The collected items will then be sent to be dispersed to typhoon victims in need.
