ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team earned its first Mountain East Conference win of the year with a 3-0 victory over UVa.-Wise Tuesday night at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions picked up its sixth shutout of the season with set victories of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20. The triumph improves CU's record to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in MEC play. The Cavilers fall to 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in league matches.
Senior middle hitter
Jasmin Sutherland had one of her best all-around matches of the year Tuesday, finishing with a match-high 13 kills to go with four blocks (two solo / two assisted). With her performance against UVa.-Wise, Sutherland, who also posted an attack percentage of .647, went over the 100-kill mark in a season for the third time in her Mountain Lion career.

Sarah Jones and junior outside hitter
Brytni Willis each chipped in eight kills with Jones adding a match-high five blocks (one solo / four assisted). Willis' nine digs landed her just shy of a double-double.

Nikki McMillan and
Amanda Walker registered 21 and 15 assists, respectively. Other contributors to the Concord victory included freshman middle hitter
Lauren Richardson (four kills / three blocks), freshman outside hitter

In what was a close contest throughout all three sets, the Mountain Lions were able to consistently put together three and four point runs over the course of the evening while withstanding several threats from UVa.-Wise to pick up the conference victory.
The key to the match was Concord's ability to finish off sets. CU took seven of the final eight points in the opening set, seven of nine in the second set and seven of eight once again in the match-deciding third set.
As a team, Concord boasted a .234 hitting percentage compared to UVa.-Wise's .088.
Concord continues its four-match homestand 7:00 p.m. Thursday vs. West Virginia Wesleyan.
