Concord Starts 4-Match Homestand vs. UVa.-Wise Tuesday

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball team is set to open a season-long four-match homestand starting with a 7:00 p.m. contest vs. UVa.-Wise Tuesday at the Carter Center. Following its match against UVa.-Wise, Concord rounds out its week by hosting West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday (7:00 p.m.), Bluefield State (Friday / 6:00 p.m.) and Glenville State (Saturday / 1:00 p.m.).

RECORDS and STANDINGS
After losing their last four matches, the Mountain Lions currently sit 10th in the Mountain East Conference standings at 7-10 overall and 0-3 in league play. UVa.-Wise enters Tuesday's match tied with CU in the MEC standings at 0-3 in conference games and 4-9 overall.

West Virginia Wesleyan begins the week 5-12 overall, but ranked fourth in the league thanks to a conference mark of 3-0. Glenville State is slotted eighth in the league at 5-11 overall and 1-3 in MEC contests.

Former West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Bluefield State is competing as an independent this season. The Lady Blues are 0-14 on the year.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
The Mountain Lions are 2-2 at home this year and 26-23 all-time under head coach Kate Southcott.

Concord has played UVa.-Wise once in the last four years, a 3-1 Mountain Lions victory last season. Junior Sarah Jones had 15 kills and three blocks in the victory. Seniors Rebecca Lovejoy and Jasmin Sutherland added six kills each. Junior Lindsey Smith served a career-high six aces against the Cavilers.

A win Thursday over West Virginia Wesleyan would be the first victory over the Bobcats in the careers of any current Concord player.

The Mountain Lions earned a 3-1 victory over Bluefield State earlier in the season behind 12 kills from Jones and six blocks (three solo / three assisted) from freshman Lauren Richardson. 

Concord has controlled its recent series' against Bluefield State and Glenville State. Since 2010, when current seniors were freshman, the Mountain Lions are 5-1 against Bluefield State and 3-1 vs. Glenville State.

As a team, Concord ranks seventh in the nation in aces per set. Individually, junior Amanda Walker is 16th in the nation in aces per set at 0.57. In addition to Walker's 34 aces, other top servers for Concord include junior Nikki McMillan (21 aces), Smith (20 aces) and Willis (19 aces).

For the third consecutive season, the quartet of Jones (153 kills), Willis (153 kills), Sutherland (92 kills) and Lovejoy (50 kills) are all on pace to crack the 100-kill plateau.

The Mountain Lions have outscored their opponents 387-322 in the third set this season.

After its four consecutive home matches, Concord embarks on a tedious four-match road trip against Notre Dame College, Urbana,  Charleston and West Virginia State.
