Kari Simon scored a goal and assisted on another to help the Concord University women's soccer team defeat Urbana, 2-1, at Anderson Field Wednesday afternoon.
In the 23rd minute,
Abby Barber struck the goalpost and Simon came running in to sneak the rebound attempt past Urbana goalkeeper Taylor Gianangeli.
It was Simon's ninth goal of the season and she has now scored in three straight games.
"Kari is on a roll right now," head coach Stefani Workman said. "She did an excellent job of finishing on the rebound from Abby's shot. We have been working really hard on that the last week."
Just ten minutes later, Simon crossed a ball into the penalty box where freshman
Emily Cole put the finishing touches on her second goal of the season.
In the 56th minute, Urbana would tally their only goal of the game with a strike from A.J. Snyder on a free kick.
Not only were the Mountain Lions able to preserve their lead over the final 34 minutes, but they also held the Blue Knights to one shot in that span.
Junior
Kaitlyn Wasylko started in net for CU and made two saves. She improved her record to 2-3-1 for the season.
Concord was able to outshoot Urbana 17-4. They also held the edge in corner kicks (4-3) and shots on goal (9-3).
Simon and Cole had three shots a piece on goal while
Melissa Woo Ling,
Abby Barber and
Sara van den Akker each had one.
"Moving forward, we have to continue to finish our opportunities at the net and tighten up more defensively," Workman said.
The Mountain Lions will finish their home regular season schedule on Saturday when they host Notre Dame College. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.Â
