ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team pulled to within two points of the fourth, and final, spot in the upcoming Mountain East Conference Tournament with a 1-1 tie against Wheeling Jesuit University Saturday at Anderson Field.

The draw pushes Concord's record to 5-7-2 overall and 3-6-2 in the MEC. The Mountain Lions head into its Tuesday match against Urbana with 11 points, two behind fourth place Charleston (4-5-1 / 13 points). Wheeling Jesuit, which is ranked third in the conference standings with 15 points, record moves to 5-7-3 overall and 4-7-3 in league contests.

Sophomore forward Kari Simon broke a scoreless tie just before halftime when she scored off of a pass from freshman midfielder Brenda Arriaza in the 43rd minute to give Concord a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals. The goal was Simon's team-best eighth of the season. Arriaza's assist was the first of her young career.

The Mountain Lions hung on to their one-goal advantage over the next 28 minutes of action thanks in no small part to sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Wasylko, who made five saves when CU had the lead.

However, Wheeling Jesuit managed to tie the contest at 1-1 when Caroline Gacka converted a penalty kick at 75:09. Neither team was able to come away with the go-ahead goal as the contest headed into overtime.

The Mountain Lions put a total of five shots on goal over the two overtime periods, but were unable score the golden goal. Defensively, CU fended off two Wheeling Jesuit shots on goal in OT en route to the draw.

As a team, Concord held advantages over Wheeling Jesuit in shots (28-21), shots on goal (17-14) and corner kicks (6-5).

Simon finished the day with a match-high 13 shots, nine of which were on goal. Freshman forward Emily Cole and senior midfielder Melissa Woo Ling added three shots each while junior back Abby Barber and junior midfielder Sami Spertzel tallied two shots apiece.

Wasylko, who was making her third start of the year for Concord, finished the game with 12 saves.

Concord takes its two-game unbeaten streak into the Urbana contest on Oct. 22. Start time from Anderson Field against the Blue Knights is slated for 2:00 p.m.
