Volleyball Drops Matches to IUP and Kutztown

NEW CASTLE, Del. - Concord University volleyball (3-6) dropped two matches on Saturday at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Wilmington University. CU fell to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in the morning, 3-1, and suffered the second loss to Kutztown University, 3-2.

CU didn't make it easy on the Hawks in the opening match.  They came out on top by keeping the lead and winning the first set, 25-22. The Mountain Lions played IUP close the rest of the match, but lost the last three sets 25-21, 27-25, and 25-16.

Sophomore Sarah Jones led the team in kills with 15, also notching nine digs and three blocks. Junior Jasmine Sutherland was second in the match with kills at five. Sutherland and Becca Lovejoy both beat their previous season-highs in blocks with five each. Brytni Willis racked up 17 digs, seven kills, three aces (a match-high) and one block for Concord against IUP.

The Mountain Lions were able to steal two sets from Kutztown in their afternoon matchup. CU took set one (25-21) and set three (25-18) from the Golden Bears, but Kutztown was able to sneak away with the win by capturing set two (25-22), set four (25-18), and set five (15-12).

Willis posted a double-double vs. Kutztown after nailing a career-high 17 kills during the match along with 12 digs, two blocks, and an ace. Jones was a threat at the net with 15 kills,14 digs, three aces, and one block.

Libero Lindsey Smith played hard on defense Saturday, ending up with a career-high 29 digs on the day. Setter Nikki McMillan matched her season-high with two 21-assist matches.

Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team for her play over the weekend.

Next on the schedule for Concord are the Wasps of Emory & Henry. CU will be traveling to Emory, Va. on Tuesday, September 11 at 3 p.m.
