ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to Charleston University Tuesday at Anderson Field. The Mountain Lions hung with Charleston for 58 minutes before the Golden Eagles were able to pull away with the victory.
After being delayed over an hour due to a lightning strike earlier in the Concord-Charleston women's soccer game, the men's match finally started with the CU (2-6-1, 1-4-0 WVIAC) defense keeping an aggressive Charleston (4-0-2, 3-0-0 WVIAC) attack in check.
Charleston recorded 10 shots and was awarded six corners in the opening half, but goalie
Mitchell Thompson and the rest of the Mountain Lion defense were able to hold Charleston scoreless as the game went into halftime tied 0-0.
The Mountain Lions cleared three more corners and defended four more shots to start the second half before a called handball in the box led to UC's first goal of the game when Rob Vincent scored at 58:57 in the second half. Charleston added to its lead with two more goals and continued to shutout Concord to take the match 3-0.
Thompson stopped a career-high 11 shots for Concord.
Adam Johnson recorded one shot to lead the Mountain Lions.
CU will look to get back on track with a win Sept. 29 at Wheeling Jesuit. Action is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
