ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University volleyball dominated the field at the Mountain Lion Triangular Monday at the Carter Center with matching 3-0 wins vs. West Virginia Tech and Emory & Henry. Concord is now 3-0 in home matches this season.
Concord (5-10 overall, 0-1 WVIAC) downed West Virginia Tech 25-16, 25-12 and 25-16 to start the day before defeating Emory & Henry 25-11, 25-18 and 25-20 in the nightcap. The victories snapped Concord's eight-match losing streak.
Concord breezed through its match vs. West Virginia Tech thanks in no small part to the Mountain Lions' hitting percentage of .333.
Sarah Jones led the offensive attack with 11 kills with
Brytni Willis adding six kills of her own while the combination of
Kylie Perdue and
Jasmin Sutherland combined for a total of 10 kills.
Purdue also had a match-high 11 blocks. The setting duo of
Nikki McMillan and
Amanda Walker accounted for 15 and 13 assists, respectively. McMillan tied teammate
Allie Pennington for a match-high two aces.
Concord came out for its second match of the day to win the opening set vs. Emory & Henry in strong fashion. The Mountain Lions went on a 12-3 run to begin the set and withstood a mini E & H rally to come away with the 25-11 win. The second set proved to be a much closer contest, with both sides trading points until the score was knotted at 18-18. From there, Concord scored the set's final seven points to earn the 25-18 win. The third set was also a close affair, but once again the Mountain Lions were able to pull out the victory with a 25-20 win for their second sweep of the day.
Jones and Willis tied with a team-high nine kills vs. the Wasps. For the match, Willis hit .471 while Jones registered a .381 hitting percentage of her own. Jones entered today's matches ranked fourth in the WVIAC in kills per set.
Four Mountain Lions served at least two aces in the win with
Lindsey Smith leading the charge at four aces followed by McMillan (3), Willis (2) and Jones (2). Sutherland made a team-best three blocks. McMillan once again led CU in assists with 14; she has had less than 10 assists in a match just once this year.
Concord will now hit the road for three matches starting with a Sept. 26 WVIAC contest at Bluefield State. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
