PHILIPPI, W.Va. - The Concord University men's soccer team held advantages in both shots and corners, but Alderson-Broaddus was able to make the most of its limited chances against the Mountain Lions to come away with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over CU in West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.
Concord out shot the Battlers 9-7 and drew 11 corner kicks to Alderson-Broaddus' four. Leading the Mountain Lions Wednesday was senior
Richard Vincent, who scored a goal and got off a game-high five shots. The score was Vincent's THIRD goal of the season.
Sebastian Escobar took two shots for Concord while
Cole Cloonan and
Adam Johnson both tallied attempts as well in the loss.
Freshman goalie
Mitchell Thompson (0-3) made his second-straight start, allowing both goals while making two saves.
The Battlers earned the victory thanks to two goals late in the first half. Jose Noriega broke the 0-0 tie with his goal at 34:10 with Zach Partyka following with a score of his own less than 10 minutes later (43:54).
Vincent made sure Concord avoided the shutout when he converted on a shot with 15 seconds to play in the game (89:45), but Concord was unable to pull off the miracle equalizer in the final 15 seconds of play.
The loss drops CU's record to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the WVIAC. Alderson-Broaddus improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the WVIAC.
Concord will look to earn its first WVIAC win of the season 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown.
