ATHENS, W. Va. - Kari Simon scored a goal seven minutes into overtime to give the Concord University women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Shepherd University Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field. The victory, which was also CU's first West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the year, was the Mountain Lions' first of the season.
In addition to her game-winning goal, Simon also assisted on Concord's first goal of the game. The freshman now has two goals and one assist on the season and is tied for the team-lead in points scored with five.
Alyanna James scored the first goal of the game for Concord (1-4-1, 1-1-0 WVIAC). James is now tied with Simon for the team-lead in goals (2), assists (1) and points scored (5).
Goalie
Kaitlyn Wasylko, who entered Sunday ranked first in the WVIAC in saves, picked up the victory after stopping seven Shepherd (1-3-0, 0-1-0) shots. Wasylko also assisted on Simon's overtime goal.
For the game, Concord held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks while trailing Shepherd 13-12 in total shots.
James got the scoring started Sunday when she took a pass from Simon and scored at 23:02 into the first half to give Concord a 1-0 lead over Shepherd. The one-goal advantage would last until Kylie Duffin evened the score up for the Rams with a score early in the second half (62:27).
Concord took several strong shots at the Rams goal after Shepherd tied the game, including an attempt by
Fiona Mearns that hit the top post, but the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into a 10-minute overtime period where Simon beat Shepherd goalie Tessa Jones for the game-winner.
The Mountain Lions are off until Saturday, Sept. 22 when they play at Alderson-Broaddus in WVIAC competition. The match is slated to start at 5:00 p.m.
