Soccer Falls to West Virginia Tech

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University men's soccer team suffered a 6-2 loss Tuesday afternoon to the undefeated West Virginia Tech Golden Bears (4-0-0) in its 2012 home-opener. 

The loss brought the Mountain Lions record to 1-3-1. 

CU posessed the ball well in the first half and took the lead with 13:08 to play in the period when Richard Vincent knocked in the first goal of the game off an assist from Caleb Bone to make it a 1-0 game. The Golden Bears retaliated with a goal of their own to tie it up four minutes later.

However, with 25 seconds left in the first half, Joe Sweet scored his first goal of the season to put Concord back up 2-1. The goal came off of another assist by Bone, giving him a career-high two assists.

Concord fell short during the second half as WV Tech scored five unanswered goals en route to its four-goal victory. CU was able to get three shots off from Vincent, Adam Johnson, and Brandon Barrett in the second 45 minutes.

As a team, CU was outshot by the Golden Bears, 12-5. Matt Hamilton made three saves for Concord in the defeat.

The Mountain Lions will continue their homestand when they face Shepherd University at Anderson Field Sunday Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.
