BASEBALL: A-B NEGATIVE

BATTLERS TAKE TWO FROM MOUNTAIN LIONS

Mid-week games in college baseball tend to be more high-scoring than weekend contests, especially in the WVIAC.  The conference schedule matches teams against division opponents for three-game series on weekends, and doubleheaders against non-divisional foes on weekdays.

The top of a team's rotation will pitch on the weekend, leaving space for offenses to take center stage during the week.

Concord dropped a pair of high-scoring, non-division, mid-week games to WVIAC North opponent Alderson-Broaddus, 10-8 and 13-7, Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Battlers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but the Mountain Lions answered in kind in the bottom of the inning.  Jerrod Groves doubled, Keith Morrisroe doubled him in and Ryan Johnston doubled home Morrisroe.  Devin Smith drew a walk, and T.J. Brockway rocketed a two-run double to left center to tie the score.
Run Scores vs A-B

Concord took the lead in the 5th, and got a little help.  With one out, Groves singled, and with a 3-2 count on Randy Beard, Groves went running on the pitch.  It was called ball four, but A-B catcher Daniel Essian through down to second, and the toss went into center field.  Groves went to third on the error, and scored on Morrisroe's sharp single to center, putting CU ahead 5-4.

Alderson-Broaddus moved back in front with a three-run 3rd, but Concord drew within 7-6 in the bottom of the inning on Smith's leadoff single and Brockway's RBI triple.  A-B rallied with two outs in the 5th to score twice and stretch its lead to 9-6.

Johnston's RBI grounder got CU within 9-7 in the 6th, but Mitch Roy's RBI single in the 7th restored A-B's three-run cushion.  Groves' second double of the game drove in Brockway in the bottom of the 7th, but it was not enough.

Groves went 4-5 to lead the Mountain Lions.  Morrisroe and Brockway had two hits each.

Randy Beard Bunts
Again, both teams rallied in the 1st inning, with A-B scoring three times and Concord countering with RBI singles from Morrisroe and Smith in the bottom of the frame.

The Battlers' lead grew to 4-2 in the 3rd on Jeff Conley's triple and Kirby Clemens' RBI groundout.  The Mountain Lions tied the game in the bottom of the inning on doubles by Morrisroe and Bret Blevins and a single from Johnston.

A-B answered with two runs in the 4th and added another pair in the 5th to lead 8-4.

Concord pulled within 8-7 in the bottom of the 5th on another RBI double from Blevins, and a two-run double from Smith.

The one-run margin held until the 7th, when A-B's Sean Collette hit a two-run home run, igniting a five-run rally that put the contest out of reach.

Groves, Morrisroe, Blevins and Smith each had two hits for Concord, with Smith adding three RBIs.
