MEN'S GOLF: SNOW MEN

CU WINS TRUNCATED GANNON SPRING MIXER

Golfers usually regard snow as bad news.  They don't like to see a “snowman” – the term for an 8 on a scorecard – and they don't like to see snow cover a course they were planning to play.

But for the Concord men's golf team, the threat of an impending snowstorm brought both bad and good news.  The bad news is that organizers of the Gannon Spring Mixer had to cut short the tournament after only one round; the good news is that the Mountain Lions leave as the winners.

The Mountain Lions' 306 team score was the best of the 16-team field, edging Mercyhurst University (PA) by one shot on the par-72, 6806-yard Pee'k N Peak Resort course in Clymer, NY.

Concord put three players in the top 20 of the individual standings, led by Sebastian Starud's even-par 72, the second-best score of the day.

The tournament had to be cut short after forecasters called for up to 17 inches to snow to fall on southwest New York and northwest Pennsylvania between Sunday night and Tuesday morning.  The Pee'k N Peak course is only 15 miles from Lake Erie.

Matt Morgan (above left) tied for 10th on the leaderboard with a 78, while Nathan Begley's 78 tied him for 17th.

Taylor Reilly shot a 79 to tie for 26th.  Evan Muscari posted an 80 to tie for 33rd out of 78 players.

Concord was the top team in par-3 scoring, tied for the lead in birdies and on par-4s, and tied for 4th on par-5's.

Starud (on cover) shot a 34 after the turn, the best back-nine result of the day.  He led the field in birdies and par-3 scoring, and tied for 2nd on par-5's.  Morgan tied for 4th on par-3's, while Begley tied for 3rd in par-4 scoring and was 5th in pars.
