BASEBALL: TWO TOO BIG

CHARLESTON'S LATE RALLIES DOOM CONCORD

Two big rallies lifted the University of Charleston's baseball team to an 11-6 win over Concord Sunday afternoon at Triana Field.  The host Golden Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the 6th, and six in the 7th, to complete a sweep of the three-game WVIAC South Division series in Charleston, WV.

Concord took the day's first lead with a two-out rally in the top of the 3rd.  Keith Morrisroe singled, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error by C Igor Molina, and scored on Bret Blevins' RBI single.
Charleston tied the game in the 4th on John Schraer's run-scoring base hit.

The Mountain Lions took advantage of UC miscues to score a run without a hit in the top of the 6th.  Ryan Johnston and Devin Smith drew back-to-back one-out walks, with Johnston coming in to score after SS Ross Easterling committed a throwing error on Ian Humphrey's grounder.

Charleston responded in the bottom of the inning with the first of its big rallies.  Ryan Foster's two-out RBI single tied the score at 2-2, and Robbie Collin followed with a three-run home run that gave the Golden Eagles a 5-2 lead.

Concord played longball to reclaim the lead in the top of the 7th.  Morrisroe and Blevins stroked one-out singles, and Josh Wenger cleared the bases with a three-run homer.  Johnston, the next man up, launched a solo shot that put the Mountain Lions ahead 6-5.

But the CU bullpen wavered in the bottom of the inning, hitting a batter and issuing three walks – two with the bases loaded – as Charleston broke out for six runs.  The big blow was a three-run homer from Foster that capped the rally and closed out the scoring.

Morrisroe and Blevins had three hits each to lead the CU lineup, while Randy Beard added two.

Up next for Concord (15-25, 11-14) is a WVIAC seven-inning doubleheader against North Division foe Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, April 18.

The twinbill will be played at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm.
