SOFTBALL: SENIOR DAY SWEEP

CU CLOSES OUT HOME SCHEDULE WITH TWO WINS OVER BLUEFIELD STATE

Concord's softball team has just one senior, Emily Gallagher.  Saturday, on Senior Day, the Mountain Lions made their only upperclassman's last home date a special occasion.

Concord marked its final 2012 appearance in Athens by sweeping intra-county rival Bluefield State, 11-3 and 9-0, in five innings each, in a WVIAC doubleheader at the CU softball complex.

Gallagher did her part, going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored over both games.

The Lady Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st, highlighted by Lindsey Whited's two-run double.

Concord came back with a three-run rally in the bottom of the 2nd.  Stephanie Harper led off with a bloop triple just inside the rightfield line.  Ericka Davies doubled down the line in left, then stole third, and Whitney Carrigan walked.

A passed ball allowed Davies to score, while Carrigan sprinted all the way to third.  That hustle paid off when Laura Kaminski brought in Carrigan with an RBI groundout to tie the score at 3-3.

The Mountain Lions exploded in the 3rd, sending ten hitters to the plate and scoring six times on five hits,
and taking advantage of five BSC errors.  Jessica Seymour led off with a bunt single and stole second.  Sheila Davies reached on an infield single, and a throwing error by Whited brought in Seymour to score and moved Davies to second.

One out later, Harper bunted for a single; a throwing error by C Caitlin Russell let Davies come in to score and moved Harper to second.  One out later, SS Lindsey Whited committed a double error on Carrigan's grounder, which allowed Harper to score with Carrigan reaching second.

Kaminski lifted a fly ball that turned into an error on RF Allison Watkins, which scored Carrigan and kept the inning alive.  Given the extra life, CU added two more runs on Mandi Workman's triple to wall in center and Emily Gallagher's RBI bunt single.

Concord pushed its lead to 10-3 in the bottom of the 4th.  Sheila Davies led off with a double, stole third, and came home on Karsyn Boothe's RBI groundout.

The Mountain Lions closed out the contest in the 5th.  With one out, Workman lofted a fly ball that eluded RF Shea Richmond, and Workman motored all the way around for an inside-the-park home run.

Concord outhit Bluefield State, 10-5.  Harper paced CU by going 3-3 with a triple and two runs scored.  Workman went 2-3 with a homer, a triple and two RBIs, while Sheila Davies finished 2-3 with a double, a stolen base and two runs.

In the circle, McDougall worked the first three innings to get the win, striking out four.  Boothe allowed one hit and struck out three over two innings.

Concord tallied in the bottom of the 1st when Workman's bloop double to center drove in Harper.

The Mountain Lions took command of the contest in the 3rd, batting around and scoring six times.  Seymour and Gallagher began the inning with back-to-back bunt singles, and each runner advanced on a wild pitch.  Seymour scored on an error on SS Cari Neal, off the bat of Sheila Davies, and Harper drove in two more runs with a double to left.

Harper moved to third on Workman's groundout, and Ericka Davies walked and stole second.  Kaminski drove them both in with a double to left.

Carrigan followed with a bloop double that plated Kaminski and stretched CU's lead to 7-0.

Concord pushed its advantage to 9-0 in the 4th.  Seymour led off with a single, advancing to third on an error by RF Shea Mebane.  Gallagher slapped an RBI single to center and moved to second on Sheila Davies' groundout.  Gallagher tried for third after Harper grounded out to shortstop, and scored when 1B Lindsey Whited's throw across the infield wound up in the outfield.

When the Lady Blues didn't score in the top of the 5th, the game ended on the run rule.

Gallagher and Seymour led the Concord lineup with two hits and two runs each, with Gallagher adding an RBI.  Harper and Kaminski each drove in two runs.

In the circle, Boothe started and allowed just one hit in three innings to get the win.  Brantlea Wood – making her collegiate pitching debut – finished with two hitless innings, walking one and striking out two.

Up next for Concord (17-26, 6-13) is a visit to West Virginia State for a WVIAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 17.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Institute, WV.
