SOFTBALL: FIRST ISN'T ALWAYS MOST

EARLY LEADS NOT ENOUGH AT CHARLESTON

Scoring in the 1st inning is good, and taking the first lead in a game is better, but it's no guarantee.

Concord's softball team scored first in each game of its WVIAC doubleheader at the University of Charleston, but dropped both contests, 4-1 and 12-4, on a cool and breezy Wednesday afternoon in Charleston, WV.  The Golden Eagles have the best conference winning percentage in the WVIAC.

Sheila Davies led off the game and reached on an error by 3B Angel Withrow.  Laura Kaminski's sacrifice bunt moved Davies to second, and she scored on Stephanie Harper's two-out RBI single.

Sheila Davies AB
UC tied the game on Samantha Herndon's RBI single in the 2nd, and took the lead on Janeen Vazquez's solo home run to lead off the 3rd.  Micki Murzinski's run-scoring groundout in the 4th made the score 3-1, and the Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the 6th.
Harper and Tamara Smith had two hits each, and Smith worked a complete game in the pitcher's circle.  Charleston pitcher Emily Fultz struck out 13 in picking up her 17th win of the season.

GAME TWO

Davies got Concord started again, with a one-out double.  She moved to third on a Harper groundout and scored on an error by 1B Janeen Vazquez.

Charleston answered with two runs in the bottom of the 1st.  A three-run 4th put them ahead 5-1, but Concord countered with three runs in the top of the 5th.
Back-to-back doubles by Davies and Harper made the score 5-2, and Ericka Davies' two-run single pulled CU within 5-4.

But with one out in the bottom of the 5th, eight consecutive UC batters reached base, and the resulting seven-run rally made the score 12-4 and ended the game on the run rule.

Concord's nine hits came from eight different players.  Sheila Davies led the way by going 2-3 with two runs scored.

Up next for Concord (15-26, 4-13) is its final home date of the season.  The Mountain Lions will host Mercer County rival Bluefield State in a WVIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, at the CU softball complex in Athens.
It's Senior Day, and CU's only upperclassmen – Emily Gallagher – will be honored during pre-game ceremonies.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm and admission is free.
