SOFTBALL: SWEEP PROVES ELUSIVE

A-B RALLIES IN 7th TO SALVAGE SPLIT WITH CU

Concord's softball team came within a half-inning of back-to-back shutouts, but had to settle for a split of its WVIAC doubleheader at Alderson-Broaddus on Saturday afternoon.

Stephanie Harper threw a two-hit shutout to lead CU to a 1-0 victory in the first game, but the Battlers rallied late to win the second game, 4-3, in Philippi, WV.

BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Lacey McDougall starts windup
A-B had a chance to break up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd, putting runners on second and third with one out.  But McDougall shut the door by getting Kristy Kellogg to fly out and Hannah Whitney to ground out.

Concord took the lead the very next inning.  With one out and Laura Kaminski on second, Whitney Carrigan singled off Powell to move Kaminski to third, and Sarah Begley brought her in with an RBI single.  Carrigan came around to score on an error on RF Ashley Neff.

Begley came through again with a two-out, RBI double in the 6th that scored Kaminski and pushed CU's lead to 3-0.

McDougall had allowed four hits through six innings, but couldn't make it through the 7th.  In the bottom of that inning, Kharrisa Renoth singled with one out, and Powell helped her own cause with a two-run homer that made the score 3-2.  The next batter up, Mary Mayer, hit a solo homer that tied the score.
Ezell grounded to shortstop for the second out.  But Kellogg drew a walk and stole second, and Whitney singled to right to bring in the winning run.

Up next for Concord (13-17, 2-4) is a visit to Fairmont State for a WVIAC doubleheader tomorrow – Sunday, April 1.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Duvall-Rossier Field.
