SOFTBALL: FIRST HOME WIN

CU SPLITS TWINBILL WITH WVU TECH

Concord's softball team earned its first home win of the season – the first in Athens for new head coach Alisa Tasler – as part of a doubleheader split with WVU Tech Wednesday afternoon at the CU softball.

CU went eight innings to win the first game, 4-3, while the Golden Bears took the nightcap, 4-0.

Both teams scored single runs in the 1st inning.  Tech moved in front with a run in the top of the 4th, but Concord took advantage of Golden Bears miscues to take the lead in the bottom of the 5th.

Lacey McDougal and Brantlea Wood drew walks off Tech pitcher Jacquelyn Wood; with two outs, CU's Stephanie Harper hit a grounder to shortstop Katherine Lively, whose throw to first went high (left) and both Concord runners came in to score.

Tech tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the top of the 7th, but CU again benefitted from Golden Bears mistakes to win the game.  With the extra-inning tie-breaker in effect in the bottom of the 8th, and Nikki Carinelli the runner at second base, Harper put down an attempted sacrifice bunt.  Wood fielded the ball, but her throw to first sailed wide and Carinelli sprinted in with the deciding run.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

WVU Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Kathryn Campbell's home run in the top of the 1st, then relied on their pitching staff to stay in front.

Laura Hensley and Jessica Stapleton combined to walk five, but they allowed just two hits and allowed only two runners to reach second base.

Campbell would finish 2-3 with three RBIs.

Up next for Concord (11-10) is its WVIAC opener -- a doubleheader in Athens against Ohio Valley on Saturday, March 24.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
