BASEBALL: SUNDAY TATERS

WENGER'S TWO HOME RUNS LAUNCH CU PAST WV WESELEYAN

Josh Wenger 2012 head shot
There's nothing quite like a double helping of taters on a Sunday afternoon.

Josh Wenger hit two home runs – posting five RBIs in the process – to help Concord's baseball team defeat West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-6, in a WVIAC South Division matchup Sunday at Hank Ellis Field in Buckhannon, WV.

Wenger's first homer came in the top of the 1st.  With one out, Jerrod Groves reached on an error and Keith Morrisroe singled, setting the table for a three-run shot to left that put CU ahead 3-0.

Wenger launched his second tater in the 5th, a two-run blast that chased WVWC starting pitcher Andrew Ornes and sparked a five-run rally.  Later in the inning, after a pitching change, the Mountain Lions scored on RBI singles from Ryan Johnston and Ian Humphrey, and a wild pitch from Bobcats reliever Casey Defibaugh.

Concord got its other run in the 4th, via a two-out rally.  Humphrey singled and Beard brought him home with a double to the gap in right-center field.

The host Bobcats scored twice in the bottom of the 2nd four more in the bottom of the 6th.

CU starter Devin Smith worked five innings to get the win.  Will Zuspan allowed two hits in four innings of relief to earn the save.

Along with Wenger's big day, Morrisroe delivered a 3-5 performance with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored.  Humphrey and T.J. Brockway added two hits each.
