SOFTBALL: NOT FEELING CAVALIER

LADY LIONS SWEPT AT UVA-WISE

Concord's softball team began its journey south for spring break with a stop in Wise, VA, on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of a non-conference doubleheader to UVA-Wise. 

The host Cavaliers won the first game, 14-6, in six innings, and won the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings.

The day started well for CU, with a run in the top of the 1st.  Tamara Smith led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice; Brantlea Wood singled, advancing Smith to third, with Smith coming in to score on an error by third baseman Megan Dillion.

The Cavaliers tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Concord quickly reclaimed the lead in the 2nd.  Becca Gleason and Jessica Seymour singled, and Smith drew a walk to load the bases.  Laura Kaminski followed with another walk to bring in Gleason and put CU ahead 2-1.

Concord extended its lead to 3-1 in the 4th, when Karsyn Boothe doubled and Smith drove her in with a single.

UVA-Wise rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 6-3 lead.  The Lady Lions came back to tie the game in the top  of the 5th – scoring runs on an error, an RBI single by Mandy Workman and a passed ball – but the Cavaliers reclaimed the lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Three more UVA-Wise runs in the bottom of the 6th ended the contest on the eight-run rule.

Concord took the game's first lead on Gleason's solo home run in the top of the 2nd.  But UVA-Wise countered with four runs in the bottom of the 4th, and rallied for five more in the 5th to end the game on the run rule.


Up next for Concord (4-6) is a weeklong appearance in the National Collegiate Softball Invitational 'Spring Training' event in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Lady Lions start their NCSI schedule with a pair of games against Pennsylvania schools on Monday, March 12 – the first against Arcadia University at 3:30 pm, the second against Clarion University at 6:30 pm.
