Concord Athletics has announced this coming Saturday, February 11, will be “Play 4 Kay Day” when the CU basketball teams host Ohio Valley in a WVIAC doubleheader at the Carter Center.

Proceeds from Saturday's games will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, dedicated to raising awareness of the fight against breast cancer.

The women's game between Concord and OVU will tip off at 2:00 pm.  The men's game will follow at 4:00.

CU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Concord chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority will assist with this special day.  Pink ribbons will be given out at the door and donations to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund will be accepted.

From the Kay Yow Cancer Fund's website, http://www.kayyow.com/Play4Kay:

"For 2012 and beyond, the WBCA Pink Zone has been rebranded as Play 4Kay. The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, will remain intact: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative.

The justification behind the rebranding is to keep the story and legacy of Kay Yow at the forefront of everything the Fund commits itself to.

Please help us further Coach Yow's mission by participating in Play 4Kay and donating proceeds from your event to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. By donating to the Fund you're allowing the women's basketball community to contribute more funds as a collective whole in support of cancer research.

Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.

With the creation of the Fund, Kay hoped to raise money to further cutting-edge research conducted by the nation's top doctors and medical experts to allow more and more cancer patients to have access to experimental drugs and clinical trials. Since the majority of these research projects are privately funded, these researchers desperately need our support in order for them to continue to make strides in finding a cure for cancer.

The official dates of the 2012 Play 4Kay initiative are February 10-20.

Kay Yow was initiated into Delta Zeta at East Carolina State University; head women's basketball coach at North Carolina State University; USA Women's Basketball Olympic Team coach; received John & Nellie Wooden Award for Top Women's College Basketball Coach in the nation in 2000; 1987 Delta Zeta National Woman of the Year
