WBB: FINISHING KICK

LATE RALLY LIFTS RAMS PAST CU

For much of the Concord women's basketball team's visit to Shepherd on Saturday afternoon, the matchup had the earmarks of a meeting of WVIAC championship contenders.  But in the end, it became a one-sided contest.

The 4th-place Rams closed out the game with a 26-10 to defeat the Lady Lions, 66-59, in the Butcher Center in Shepherdstown, WV.  It was the third straight loss for Concord and the fourth straight win for Shepherd.

CU's leading scorer and All-WVIAC candidate Jolysa Brown picked up two fouls less than six minutes after tipoff and the score tied at 12-12.  Brown had to miss the rest of the 1st half, but her teammates rallied in her absence.

The Lady Lions went on 12-4 run to lead 24-16 with 8:16 left before the halftime and took a 35-30 advantage into the break.

Brown took over the game after her return to the lineup.  She scored Concord's first 12 points of the 2nd half, and after Andrea Bertrand sank a layup with 11:04, Concord took its biggest lead of the day at 49-40.

But the Lady Lions stumbled from there.  CU missed 15 of its last 19 shots and committed nine turnovers, opening the way for Shepherd to go on its game-winning rally.

Shepherd moved in front 53-51 when, after a Concord turnover, Katie Biggs sank a three-pointer with 6:34 remaining.  The Rams pushed the lead to 56-51 on its next possession, on a three-point play by Emily Daniel.

However, the Lady Lions roared back as time wound down.  Bertrand dropped in a layup, and freshman Rachel Artrip scored CU's next six points – on a three-point shot and a three-point play – to square the score at 59-59 with 2:01 to go.

The game-deciding moment came with :33 left.  Shepherd had the ball for an inbounds play with only four seconds left on the shot clock, but Jimyse Brown drained a baseline jumper while being fouled.  The 39% free throw shooter made the ensuing charity shot, and the outcome was decided.

Jolysa Brown led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 7-14 from the field and a perfect 6-6 from the line.
Bertrand added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Biggs led Shepherd (13-9, 10-6) with 16 points.  Four Rams scored in double figures, and Jimyse Brown finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
