TWO BIG INNINGS LEAD WINGATE PAST CU

Wingate University used two big innings to defeat the Concord baseball team, 14-5, in a non-conference contest at Ron Christopher Stadium in Wingate, NC.

The Bulldogs scored five times each in the 4th and 5th innings to complete a sweep of the three-game series matching up two regionally-ranked opponents.

Concord stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st.  Randy Beard led off with a walk and Keith Morrisroe reached on an infield single.  After Bret Blevins advanced both runners with a sacrifice, Josh Wenger scored Beard with a single to center.  Ryan Johnston plated Morrisroe with a single to left.  One out later, Jerrod Groves drove in Wenger with yet another single.

Wingate scored a single run in the bottom of the 2nd, but Concord matched it in the top of the 3rd.  Morrisroe led off the inning with a walk, and stole second.  One out later, Wenger reached on an infield single with Morrisroe moving to third.
Morrisroe scored when WU pitcher uncorked a bad pickoff throw to first base.

The Mountain Lions got their final run in the top of the 6th, on Johnston's RBI fielder's choice.

Wenger went 3-4 to pace the Concord offense.  Johnston was 2-4 with two RBIs, and Morrisroe scored three runs.

Up next for Concord (0-3) is a series against another ranked opponent.  The Mountain Lions visit Armstrong Atlantic State -- #8 in the NCBWA's Southeast Region rankings and #25 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll – for a three-game set next weekend in Savannah, GA.

The Mountain Lions and Pirates (3-0) will play single nine-inning games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, February 10-12. 
Friday's game starts at 2:00 pm, Saturday's contest begins at 1:00 pm and Sunday's series finale starts at 11:00 am.
