SOFTBALL: BEARS DOWN

OFFENSE CARRIES LADY LIONS TO SWEEP OF SHAW

Stephanie Harper AB
Concord's softball team definitely brought their bats with them on Saturday's road trip to Shaw University.

The Lady Lions erupted for 23 runs in twice winning by the run rule in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Bears, 13-1 and 10-1, at the Walnut Street Complex in Raleigh, NC.

Concord took control of the first game almost immediately, scoring seven runs in the 1st inning and five runs in the 2nd.

Two-run doubles from Brantlea Wood and Jessica Seymour, and a two-run single by Sheila Davies, keyed the 1st-inning rally.  Seymour launched a three-run home run to highlight CU's 2nd inning.

Pitchers Lacey McDougall and Karsyn Boothe benefitted from the run support, combining to limit Shaw to four hits and no walks, with four strikeouts.

Concord scored in every inning of the second game.  Ericka Davies drove in a run with a single in the 1st and hit a two-run homer in the 3rd.  In between, Stephanie Harper brought in a run with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd.  Whitney Carrigan's double drove in two runs in the 4th, and the Lady Lions brought the run rule into effect again by scoring three unearned runs in the 5th.

Harper got the win in the circle, allowing one hit in four innings.  Tamara Smith made her pitching debut, giving up one hit in a shutout 5th inning.

Up next for Concord (4-4) is a visit to WVU Tech for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 1.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
