BsB: PIRATED WEEKEND

CU WRAPS UP SERIES AGAINST NATIONALLY-RANKED ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC STATE

Concord's baseball wrapped up its three-game series at Armstrong Atlantic State this weekend, falling to the 22nd-ranked Pirates 17-10 on Saturday and 18-4 on Sunday, at Pirate Field in Savannah, GA.

Saturday's game saw a strong wind blowing out to left, and a slugfest ensued.

CU played small ball, however, to take the first lead.  In the top of the 2nd, Josh Wenger led off with a walk, and stole second.  Zach Cloxton singled to center to drive him in.

AASU took the lead with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd.  Concord responded with four runs in the top of the 4th on a two-run home run by Ryan Johnston and a two-run single by Jerrod Groves.

The Pirates answered with nine runs in the bottom of the inning, capped by a three-run homer by Clayton Miller.

CU climbed within one run a run in the top of the 5th – on T.J. Brockway's RBI single – and a grand slam from Bret Blevins (right) in the 6th.  But AASU pulled away with three-run rallies in the 7th and 8th innings.

Both teams banged out 18 hits, with Concord getting three apiece from Beard, Brockway and Ian Humphrey.

In Sunday's series finale, Armstrong Atlantic took command with six runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and four more in the 2nd.

Concord scored all its runs in the 7th.  Devin Smith, Keith Morrisroe and Elisha Hill drew walks – loading the bases – and Wenger put the Mountain Lions on the board with a two-run double to left.  Johnston drove in Hill with a fielder's choice groundout, and Wenger later scored on a double steal.

Up next for CU (0-6) is a visit to Laurinburg, NC, for a three-game non-conference series against St. Andrew's Presbyterian College next weekend.

The Mountain Lions and Knights will play a seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday, February 18.  The series concludes with a single nine-inning game on Sunday, February 19.  First pitch both days is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
