LADY LIONS SUFFER ANOTHER LAST-SECOND LOSS

Just when it seemed Concord's women's basketball team had shaken off Saturday's last-second loss to West Liberty, and was poised to claim a win against another WVIAC title contender, it happened again.

Lydia Bridenbaugh's layup at the buzzer lifted West Virginia Wesleyan over the Lady Lions, 76-74, Wednesday night at the Carter Center.

The setback spoiled an impressive Concord comeback that saw CU spot the visitors a 21-point lead midway through the 1st half before storming back to trail just 41-40 at the break.

The Lady Lions quickly took the lead in the 2nd half and were ahead 74-68 with 3:12 to play.  The Bobcats' Danae Hill made a three-point shot that cut the lead in half, and CU missed two free throws on its next trip.

Bridenbaugh's three-pointer with 1:41 left tied the game, and Concord committed turnovers on each of its last three possessions.  The last turnover gave WVWC the ball with :02 left, and Bridenbaugh scored off an inbounds play.

Concord started the game slowly, missing 15 of its first 16 shots.  The Bobcats made 10 of their first in sprinting out to a 30-9 lead with 9:20 before halftime.  CU trailed 35-16 before starting its comeback.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Rachel Artrip and Anna Truckley ignited the rally, and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Camisha Alexander capped it.  The Lady Lions went into the locker room trailing by just a point and would lead by as many as eight points in the 2nd half.

All five Concord starters scored in double figures, led by Amanda Smith's 15 points.  Truckley and Alexander each scored 14 points.  Jolysa Brown ended with 13 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore forward Andrea Bertrand posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Bridenbaugh, the WVIAC's 2nd-leading scorer, led Wesleyan (13-5, 10-3) with 26 points.  Brittany Maxey posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Up next for Concord is a visit to WVIAC rival Shepherd on Saturday, February 4.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the Butcher Center in Shepherdstown, WV.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3 The Ticket, starting with the “Mountain Lions Preview Show” at 1:40.  A link to the radio webcast can be found at the top of the women's basketball homepage at cumountainlions.com.
