Women’s Basketball Starts New Year vs. UC

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University women's basketball team returns to action after a two-week break when it hosts Charleston at the Carter Center on January 3 in a West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest.

MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• The Mountain Lions enter Thursday's contest slotted eighth in the WVIAC standings with a conference record of 2-2. The Golden Eagles are a game back of Concord with a 2-3 record in league play.

• The Maroon and Gray snapped their five-game losing streak on Dec. 8 with a 64-59 win at West Virginia Wesleyan. Three players scored in double figures for Concord with junior Amanda Smith leading the way with 15 points. Senior Katy Somerville chipped in 14 points while junior Sammi Webster chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.

• Other standout performances at Wesleyan included sophomore guard Jacqueline Kestner's 11 rebounds and Stephanie Wagner's seven assists and five steals.

• Smith, who has scored at least 12 points in seven of Concord's last eight games, ranks 11th in the WVIAC in field goal percentage (51.5 percent) and 15th in points per game (14.4).

• Kestner (5.8 rpg) and Webster (4.3), who both set career-highs in rebounds at Wesleyan, rank second and fourth in rebounds per game for CU, respectively.

• Concord is 14th in the nation in turnovers per game, having committed just 14.1 turnovers per game on the season.

• Wagner has had a terrific start to her Concord career. The WVIAC's leader in assists, currently averages 10.1 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 80.8 percent from the foul line. She is 21-for-26 from the line this year and 11-for-13 final three minutes of games.

The Coaches: Kenny Osborne is 198-180 overall as a head coach and 186-165 in his time at Concord. Adam Collins is in his first year at Charleston. He has a 67-52 record as a head coach.
