Concord Drops 72-66 Decision vs. Virginia Intermont

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost to Virginia Intermont, 72-66, Monday night at the Carter Center.

Concord's (2-6) offensive attack was led by four players in double figures. Freshman guard Leslie Mack led the way with a 16-point effort. Mack, who scored 17 points at West Virginia State last week, has been Concord's leading scorer in her last two games played. She was 5-for-12 from the field, with the majority of her points coming from three-point range where she connected on 4-of-10 shots.

Junior guard Amanda Smith added 12 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal while both sophomore forward Rachel Artrip and senior guard Katy Somerville chipped in 11 points. Somerville also made a game-high four steals and tied sophomore guard Stephanie Wagner for a game-best five assists. Artrip grabbed six rebounds and passed out four assists in addition to her scoring output.

Other contributors included sophomore forward Jacqueline Kestner, who pulled in a career-high 10 rebounds and junior guard Logan Castlebury, who totaled five points, six rebounds and one assist.

As a team, Concord combined for a season-high 18 assists. The Mountain Lions' defense forced Virginia Intermont (6-5) into 23 turnovers which CU was able to score 25 points off of. For the game, Concord held advantages over the Cobras in points off turnovers (25-19), second chance points (12-7) and assists (18-14). CU only committed 12 turnovers, two off its season-best.

Concord jumped out to a 14-9 in the contest's first eight minutes of play, but Virginia Intermont used a 26-12 run over the final 12 minutes of the first period to take a commanding 37-24 lead into halftime. Virginia Intermont kept its lead firmly in double-digits for the majority of the second half and found itself up on Concord by 26 points (67-41) with 6:43 to play in regulation.

However, Concord did not quit despite the large deficit. Spurred on by eight points from Mack and five more from Artrip, the Mountain Lions were able to cut the Cobras' lead to just six points at 72-66 with a 25-3 spurt of their own before their comeback bid ran out of time.

Jayla Lane led Virginia Intermont with 14 points and seven rebounds. The loss was Concord's fifth single-digit defeat of the year.

Concord will look to snap its losing streak 5:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 6) when it hosts Lincoln Memorial at the Carter Center.
