Volleyball Edged By West Virginia State, 3-2

INSTITUTE, W. Va. - Concord University volleyball was edged by West Virginia State University in a West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference match-up Thursday evening, 3-2. This loss drops CU to 5-7 in WVIAC play and 14-17 overall.

Freshman Kylie Perdue made her presence known with the first point of the match, grabbing her first of eight kills. West Virginia State answered back and tied the score up 3-3. The Mountain Lions took back control and didn't let it go after that, winning the set 25-22.

The second set proved more challenging for CU. The Yellowjackets grabbed the lead after three lead changes at 17-17 and kept it to take the set, 25-21.

Concord retaliated during the third set with a score of 25-22. The Mountain Lions found themselves up 14-10 when the Yellowjackets made a run on five CU errors and their own ace to put them up 14-16. CU took a moment with a timeout to regroup and followed that with three kills. Sophomore Sarah Jones, sophomore Brytni Willis, and Perdue each had one. The team's effort gave them the set win.

The Mountain Lions grabbed an early lead in the fourth set but ultimately dropped it to the Yellowjackets, 25-18. CU started strong with a 9-7 lead but West Virginia State went on an eleven point run to take the lead and kept it.

The match was decided in the fifth set with a West Virginia State victory, 15-9. The Yellowjackets started with the lead and didn't relinquish it the entire set.

Jones earned her seventh double-double of the season with 15 kills, and eight blocks. B. Willis earned 10 kills, three aces, one assist and a block. Perdue matched her season-high with eight kills, five blocks, three digs, and two assists.

Sophomore Nikki McMillan had 15 assists, nine digs, one kill and an ace. Sophomore Amanda Walker earned 15 digs, 14 assists, three blocks, and one ace.

The Mountain Lions are currently ranked fifth in the WVIAC for blocks averaging 2.29 per set. CU is also ranked fifth for digs with 14.53 per set. Sophomore Lindsey Smith is still holding onto fourth in digs in the conference with a 4.21 average per set.

Concord returns to action at home on Saturday. The first match is set for 11:00 a.m. at the Carter Center agaisnt West Liberty. CU will also be taking on Wheeling Jesuit at 4:00 p.m.
