Men’s Basketball Heads Back on the Road at WV State

ATHENS, W. Va. - After losing its first game of the season at Alderson-Broaddus, the Concord University men's basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways Thursday night at West Virginia State in a West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest..

• Concord enters Institute, W. Va. having won its last three games against the Yellow Jackets including a 74-73 on the road last season that was sparked by a team-high 15 points from senior forward Damien Tunstalle. WV State holds a slight 21-20 lead over Concord in the series dating back to the 1993-94 season.

• Concord has two players currently scoring at least 10 points per game (ppg): Tunstalle at 19.0 and sophomore forward Jordan Davis at 11.8.

• Sophomore guard Paul Byrd (9.8 ppg) and freshman guard Jake Bischoff (9.3 ppg) are CU's third and fourth leading scorers.

• Davis has been CU's main force on the glass so far with an average of 6.3 rebounds per game. Tunstalle (3.5), sophomore guard Thomas Brown (3.3) and Byrd (3.0) all average at least 3.0 rpg.

• Brown has scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds in two games as a starter.

• Sophomore guard Mike Boyd is averaging five assists per game over the last two contests.

• As a team, Concord ranks first in the WVIAC in defensive rebounding (28.5), third in three-point field goal percentage (.410), fourth in free throw shooting (.745) and fifth in overall field goal percentage (.484).

• CU's 78.2 points per game rank ninth in the WVIAC.

• David Ford and Anton Hutchins are WV State's top two scorers with per game averages of 12.6 and 11.0, respectively.

• The Yellow Jackets score 59.4 points per game (14th in the WVIAC), but hold opponents to just 64.8 points per game (Second in the WVIAC).

The Coaches: Concord is led by Kent McBride, who is in his second season in charge of the men's basketball program. McBride is 20-13 as a head coach.

Bryan Poore is in his 14th season at West Virginia State. Poore owns a 257-133 record with the Yellow Jackets and a 269-147 overall as a collegiate head coach.
