ATHENS, W. Va. - The Concord University men's basketball team will look to keep its perfect record intact when it opens up West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition against Pitt-Johnstown.
MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
• Pitt-Johnstown has controlled the all-time series against Concord having won seven of the last eight contests. However, Concord won last year's game 89-87.
• Concord is 1-4 in its WVIAC openers dating back to the 2007-08 season.
• The Mountain Lions started the season in Erie, Pa. where they picked up two impressive victories with wins against Mercyhurst College (82-69) and Kutztown (79-73).
• Helping lead Concord to its perfect 2-0 record to start the season has been senior forward
Damien Tunstalle, who is averaging a team-best 19.5 points per game (ppg) on 50 percent shooting.
• Sophomore forward
Jordan Davis has also helped the CU offensive attack with 13.0 ppg in addition to a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.
• Freshman guard
Jake Bischoff has made an immediate impact for Concord by scoring over 10 points a game in his first two collegiate contests.
• Sophomore guards
Paul Byrd and
Alex McGlothin, a pair of Northern Kentucky transfers, have also left an early impression on CU's season. Byrd is leading the team in assists (4.0 apg) and has scored 7.0 ppg while McGlothin has shot a WVIAC high .750 from the floor while averaging 7.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and two steals per game.
• Concord was picked to finish in 10th place this season in the WVIAC according to the preseason coaches' poll. CU was picked to finish in the same spot a season ago before proving the voters wrong and finishing sixth.
The Coaches: Concord is led by
Kent McBride, who is in his second season in charge of the men's basketball program he once starred for. McBride is 19-12 as a head coach.
In contrast, Bob Rukavina is in his 24th season Pitt-Johnstown's head coach. Rukavina is 379-256 in his tenure as the Mountain Cat's head coach.
